What Would Billy Say?

Seems like shootings dominate the news lately, along with some misguided tweets.  Anyway, if we are not seeing mass shootings, we’re seeing police shootings or homicides played out somewhere every day.  And that’s just what we see on the news in between whatever else we’re doing on any given day.  I wrote this commentary in 2008, and it is interesting how ten years later, it could be on the news tonight.  Be safe out there, be watchful out there, and most importantly protect yourself from the evils that surround us…on any given day.

From January 29, 2008, Jacksonville, Florida

I watched the local news last night. The headline was about a police officer shot by a confused individual who had stolen a pair of jeans. While running away from the police he turned and fired six shots from his .45 caliber semi-auto pistol nearly killing the officer.
The officer whose face was shattered by one of the bullets still managed to return fire (after being shot six times) and bring this tormented soul down.
Terrible as this is, I have to watch as some uninformed, bigoted, racist woman says, “that’s the sheriff for you, shoot first ask questions later”.
Why, oh why, do we even give people like this airtime on the news?
I wanted to reach into my TV and rip her throat out.
You see it is bad enough we have a criminal element in this city, what is adding to it are these self-centered idiotic morons who stereotype everything to meet their twisted agendas. The news media putting these quotes on air or print only add to the twisted attitudes of those in society weak to the news media’s potential influence.
Open your eyes lady, the sheriff is not out there to take target practice; they are there to protect you. And one day when you need that help, you’ll regret those words.
They might just watch as you’re shot by a mugger. Then ask you later…
“Weren’t you on the news the other night?”

Today’s thought:
Seems like the news doesn’t change…it just intensifies.  Unless... we make real changes as a country, community, counsel and most importantly as personal individuals, responsible for our own actions… while we help mold those around us, for the greater good of the world.
